Sustainability Program

At Montgomery School, we’re dedicated to fostering a deep connection with the environment and empowering students to make a positive impact. Our unique, resource-rich campus provides a vibrant backdrop for learning and doing, where students grow their understanding of environmental stewardship and develop skills that prepare them to become thoughtful, proactive leaders. Through collaborative initiatives with our community, we aim to contribute meaningfully to global and local sustainability efforts.

Green Mission Statement

In keeping with its mission to ignite a love of learning and prepare students for their future, Montgomery School is committed to being a leader in environmental sustainability. Aware of the significant environmental challenges our planet faces, our school strives to be an active participant in sustainable practices with and for the community in which we are located.

In this work, Montgomery’s rich campus natural resources uniquely position us to harness the individual talents of our students at a pivotal and formative time in their growth. In defining our commitment to being a “Green School,” Montgomery will focus on healthy operations of the campus, living in balance with our natural systems, sustainable learning, and collaboration with our neighbors and stakeholders.

The School seeks to:

  • Use resources in an ever more sustainable way, pursuing energy efficiency and the incorporation of clean, renewable technologies wherever possible in the creation and maintenance of learning spaces.

  • Work to reinforce strong cultural practices around stewardship, including recycling, reuse, and lessening waste in our daily lives–in unison with the school’s character education program.

  • Create a healthy educational community by offering nutritional food on campus. Promote a deep understanding of food sustainability through active use of campus gardens and responsible sourcing of foods for campus use.

  • Empower students through our educational program in the areas of ecological sustainability, environmental health, nutrition, and personal responsibility.

  • As an important player in the local watershed, manage water’s presence on our campus and in our lives. The importance of responsible water use, stormwater management, and keeping our natural waters clean grows as climate change impacts our local ecosystem.

  • Engage and partner with the township, our neighbors, and other individuals and organizations with whom we are closely connected to promote positive outcomes for all. Whenever possible, seek and respect the power of collective education and action.

By demonstrating our stewardship as an organization and empowering students to demonstrate their own agency for sustainability in their lives, Montgomery School strives to contribute to both global and local efforts to improve the environment for all now and in the future.
