Letters from Mrs. Marotta

I hope the summer has been full of wonderful moments and memories for all. I've been hearing from many of you about amazing new adventures that students have participated in this summer. I can't wait to hear all about the fun that's been had over the summer months. I miss your children terribly, and can't wait to see them back on campus!

It's been a great summer. Some teachers have moved to new classrooms and grades, new babies and puppies have visited campus, and I've really enjoyed getting to know Mark Dixon, our new Middle School Head. Mark has already proven to be a valuable asset on our Admin team, and we're all excited about the Middle School being in his excellent, experienced hands.

Can you say spring fever? Last week was glorious! I've seen classes outside taking advantage of the warm temperatures and absorbing energy from sunny skies.

"ONLY AT MONTGOMERY" MOMENTS

Last week fourth grade student Ashlyn Porter delivered Lower School Chapel, courtesy of a Benefit item available annually to present a Lower School Chapel (which will be available at this year's Benefit as well!). Ashlyn blew us all away with her public speaking skills. Her command of the audience and delivery are skills that adults aspire to emulate. If you have a few minutes, take a look at the video of Ashlyn's talk and prepare to be amazed! Years of public speaking opportunities at Montgomery (and for Ashlyn this started in PreK) really makes a difference. I can hardly wait to see her eighth grade Chapel!

Leader in Me, Habit #2:

Last month I began to write about the habits of the Leader in Me by Dr. Stephen Covey, which to reiterate is our character theme in Lower School this year. Habit 2 is "begin with the end in mind." What does this mean? Students need to plan ahead to set goals that have meaning and that can make a difference. We want students to see that they are an important part of the classroom and contribute to our mission and that they actually LOOK for ways to be a good citizen, full of strong character. We hear often that early education in leadership skills bodes well for a successful adulthood. Here's another article about attributing success in adulthood as early as kindergarten. Parents, this is another good reason to feel good about your investment in your child's future.
