Dear 5th-8th Grade Families,
We hope this letter finds you well. Navigating through the ever changing journey with middle school students can be rewarding and just as challenging. It is important to always be thinking about staying informed about the social and emotional developments that middle schoolers will face during these years in their education. Partnership from home to school is just as important. We want to invite you all to join us in an opportunity to explore aspects of middle schooler lives by participating in a parent/caregiver and teacher book group.
The book we have selected to focus on is, “The Emotional Lives of Teenagers” by Lisa Damour. One of our goals is to continue to foster the culture of partnership and connection from home to school. We believe focusing on this book will allow us to join and learn together around supporting our students. This book is excellent and filled with concrete and practical strategies around the psychological changes that adolescents go through during their teenage years. The book was also written post Covid-19, so it offers a current time perspective.
We believe that participating in this book group will have multiple benefits for all of us:
Gain a deeper understanding of the social and emotional development of middle schoolers that will help us better connect and relate to their needs at this time.
- Promote open communication around the the challenges that we face day to day, month to month, and year to year as our students grow in their middle school years
Connect and learn from each other. It can be challenging and hard to work through parenting, and hearing from other people’s stories and experiences is helpful to recognize that we are all going through this together. In addition, learning from our individual insights will only bring us together as a community!
The book group meetings will be facilitated by Dr. Taryn Conroy and Allen Vandegrift. All of our collective voices and learnings from the book will make these conversations valuable. We will meet on November 6th from 6:00-7:30 PM in Gresh. To get started, please fill out this participation survey and purchase the book. We suggest that you read through as much of the book as possible prior to our first meeting.
