Dear Middle School Families,

Please read this email in its entirety.

As part of our Middle School program, all students in grades 6 through 8 participate in an afternoons program that runs from 3:05 until 4:15 Monday - Thursday.  Students must participate in one interscholastic sport during the year, but many students play two or three sports.  Carolyn Blair, Director of Campus Operations and Student Activities, provides details on our athletic program below.

We also offer art and music options for students as part of this required afternoons program.  In the fall, Kim Knauer, Art Department Chair, will offer a ceramics class, and she provides details about this offering below.  More information about winter and spring art/music alternatives will be provided prior to each season but the offerings for the year are noted below.

Please review this information with your Middle School student prior to the beginning of the school year, discuss their interests.  Students will meet with their team/activity on the first day of school (Tuesday 9/6), and should be equipped for athletic practices that day.

Update from Director of Campus Operations and Student Activities, Carolyn Blair

Welcome to Middle School Interscholastic Athletics! I hope this communication will help to inform both returning and new Middle School students and their families about what to expect in our Athletics program in the coming year.  All Middle School students are required to play one sport each year, but are encouraged to play all three seasons. We will offer nine (9) sports in the 2022-23 school year: boys’ and girls’ soccer, and cross country in the fall, boys’ and girls’ basketball in the winter, and softball, baseball, and boys’ and girls’ lacrosse in the spring. When classes end each day, Middle School students go to their afternoon activities, which end at 4:15 pm, except on days when there are games.

****In the event we do not have enough players, we reserve the right to cancel the sport for the season****

Fall sports practices will begin on Tuesday, September 6th, the first day of School. All Middle School students will meet in the gym for a brief introduction/meeting and then break up into smaller groups with the sport they select. They will meet with the coaches and review expectations for their sport and for the fall season. Students should have all their equipment and their practice clothes on that day,  and we will head to the fields for practice.  If they are undecided, students may “try” multiple options this first week of school, but will need to make their final choice no later than Friday, September 9th.

Fall Athletic Schedule
The schedules for the fall season are complete and available on our website under Quicklinks (athletics schedule). You can also subscribe to the ical feed for any of these teams which will feed the most current schedule information to your calendar. Please note that we sometimes make changes to the schedule, so if you do not subscribe to the ical feed, please plan to revisit the website for updates periodically throughout the season.  In the event of a game change, Mrs. Blair will update the website calendar, notify the students, and send an email to Middle School parents. Students may use a Montgomery telephone line to call parents and let them know of any schedule changes that day, in the case of inclement weather. The school’s receptionist (Ms. Kirkner) will also always have information on any game changes due to weather by 1:30 pm on the day of the game, so you may call her directly for an update (610-827-7222).

Practices are held Monday through Thursday 3:05 - 4:15, rain or shine. The last Fall games/practices will take place on Thursday 10/27.  The week in between seasons (referred to as “Transition Week”) will have the following schedule.

  • Monday 10/31 All School Noon dismissal
  • Tuesday 11/1 students will stay until 4:15 pm for a “Fun Period”
  •  Wednesday 11/2 students will stay until 4:15 pm and have “Athletics Pizza Party”
  • Thursday 11/3 we host our Athletic Assembly in Bell Hall at 3:15 pm.  Parents are invited and encouraged to attend.
  • Nov. 7-10 Middle School 3:15 dismissal
  • Winter sports begin Monday, November 14th.

Required Equipment

  • Practice Uniform: Montgomery shirt and shorts: same as PE Uniform
  • Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer: shin guards, cleats (recommended, but not required), maroon socks for games (available for sale in the Athletic office for $5).
  • Cross Country: running sneakers

Arts Update from Art Department Chair, Kim Knauer

Fall Ceramics Class - taught by Ms. Knauer

In addition to interscholastic athletics, Montgomery offers either an art or music option each season. In the fall, we have after-school ceramics. This class gives students a chance to dive more deeply into working with clay, glazes and alternative surface treatments. We will explore multiple hand-building techniques and make both functional and sculptural pieces. Students will have regular 4:15 dismissal. Please contact Ms. Knauer with any questions regarding this after-school option.

Dismissal & Transportation
Dismissal for Middle School students is by car or bus at 4:15 pm.  Days that extend beyond this are included in the sports calendar with home and away games. Parents are responsible for arranging transportation home on days that extend beyond 4:15.  On Fridays, there is an all school dismissal at 3:15 pm.  Please note, Middle School students are not permitted to ride the buses home with the Lower School students at 3:15 pm Monday-Thursday per the School Districts. Parents picking up students after games should do so at the gym lobby.

We hope you find this information helpful as you plan for the new school year. If you have any questions about these programs, please contact Mrs. Blair or Ms. Knauer directly.

Warmly,
