A MESSAGE FROM MR. MCMANUS |
|
|
|
There is power in reflection. To take a moment and look at how far you have come. How you have transformed and morphed into a better version of yourself.
Take a moment and give yourself credit. For all the mountains you have climbed and the currents you swam against. You’ve made it this far and you’ve conquered so many demons.
You’ve awoken from the nightmares Imagine how far you can go. |

This poem by Natalie Peralta was a prompt for part of our professional day last Tuesday (thanks to Dr. Conroy for presenting). While not written specifically for schools, I think the teachers saw some of themselves in these words. We spent the day in a wide variety of activities but began the day intentionally reflecting on ourselves and our community. We held small group discussions about belonging and identity and followed that with personal reflection on the year so far. While the rest of the day was devoted to curriculum and procedures, it was nice to use some of the morning to focus on the adults. There is power in reflection.
At Montgomery, we strive every day to make space for mindfulness and reflection. Counseling lessons, morning sharing, advisory prompts and our chapels all provide space for children to press pause on “doing” and focus on “being.” As the words above the Bell Hall stage remind us, we are whole when we align our minds, bodies, and our character. This focus–and all you do at home with your children–pays off in large and small interactions such as these I have witnessed:
- A student celebrating her birthday shows up at my office door with a treat to share.
- A kindergartener leans over on the way out of chapel to whisper, “good job today!”
-
A team of middle school basketball players literally runs to help a teacher whose hands are full of materials.
What’s the connection? In addition to explicit lessons about character, some studies see a link between mindfulness and prosocial behavior, our actions to help others. When we take the time to be aware of ourselves and our surroundings and quiet our own anxieties, we notice others and are more equipped to be present for them.
Speaking of prosocial behavior, come spend some time with us please! We’d love to see you at chapels, in the audience at next week’s awesome Xanadu performance, and at the Annual Benefit (early bird tickets go on sale March 7th). We have so much to celebrate in the lives of our children and in relationship with one another. I hope you, too, remember to find time to reflect and that we will see you soon! |
