Mentorships, friendships, partnerships…these are the kinds of important relationships that naturally emerge between Montgomery “buddies.” Students, whose age difference might keep them from knowing one another, are paired together for a year—partners in team building activities, schoolwide events, and special projects. Whether a fifth grader is reading to a kindergartner or a sixth grader and first grader are working together to engineer an arcade game, each participant is learning and growing through their own experience.

A MESSAGE FROM MRS. MAROTTA |
|
|
WOW! We are off to an exciting 2022. It was a happy occasion to greet the students back to campus this week. I know we are all hopeful that this new COVID variant will leave our world quickly. Our amazing Lower School teachers arrived early on Monday morning to make sure desks were distanced and for now, separated from table groups. Here are some of the other mitigations we continued in Lower School this week to help keep our students healthy!
- Masks will stay on while students are in the gym for PE classes on colder days.
- We will eat lunch outside when possible. When dining indoors, we will make sure students are distanced as much as possible, facing forward.
- Increase actual hand washing times.
- Ensure students are wearing masks that fit their faces.
-
We continue to wipe down surfaces that are being touched often throughout the day.
What Parents Can Do - Continue to monitor your child’s health for symptoms daily.
- Ensure that your child has a mask that fits their face. This can be challenging, but they are out there! Send a spare mask daily as well.
- Kid size resources to purchase masks online:
- Remind your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Let your child’s teacher know if you wish for your child to remain masked while outside.
-
PLEASE send your child to school with appropriate outerwear. Our teachers are happy to take students outside often, but children need to be comfortable with coats, hats, etc.
END OF FIRST SEMESTER REMINDERS
The end of the first semester takes place on Friday, January 14. End of the first semester reports will be headed your way in the coming weeks. You will see that we assign marks of Supporting (S), Meeting (M), and Exceeding (E) on the checklist portion of the reports. |
In addition, for fifth grade, we give letter grades as a means of preparing the students for the grading system that is used in the Middle School. It is easy to think of an S, M, and E as a grade equivalent for an A, B, C, etc. However, I urge you not to do this. Rather, please understand that a “Meeting” mark means your child is meeting our grade level expectations for the grade and is a high mark at Montgomery School! It means that students are doing what is expected and required within their grade level. This is a wonderful thing! Exceeding refers to students who consistently demonstrate the skills in the classroom. Supporting continues to mean that extra assistance has been given to help students complete the skill. Special Area teachers in the areas of PE, art, Spanish, science, and music will also report on your child’s progress.
Teachers take a great deal of time to reflect on the marks given and address those in the comment section of the report. Please take the time to read these reports, and let us know if you have any questions or comments. RESOLUTION TIME!
With the start of January and needing a “diversion” at home, away from COVID, it’s time to talk about resolutions! The start of a new calendar year is a great time to reflect, congratulate one another on what has gone well, and analyze where improvements can be made. Kids love having something to work towards! A student told me the first day back from break that their New Year’s “revolution” (yes, revolution - love that!) is “to grow as tall as Mrs. Marotta!” Now while I love this thinking and high aspiration, I stopped to tell her she’s beautiful as she is and let’s exchange ideas on how we can be healthy and help our bodies grow! Giving guidance on a reasonable, achievable goal inspires good conversation and teaches children that they truly can reach their desired outcome.
May you all find peace, success, and joy in 2022! | |
