Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 - October 15 |
Hispanic Heritage Month gave Montgomery students the opportunity to learn more about the diversity of Hispanic and Latina experiences and cultures. In Lower School, we celebrated the special month by reading stories about famous celebrities such as Rita Moreno, Frida Kahlo, Sonia Sotomayor, Ellen Ochoa, Andy Garcia, and many more. Middle School students learned about current events in Hispanic nations, researching their own country of choice in 7th grade. Our 6th grade students were introduced to traditional Hispanic styles of music and dance, and 8th-graders read classic short stories by Latin writers as well as discuss magical realism and its prominent role as a classic genre of Hispanic literature. The children also practiced their geography and identified the Spanish-speaking countries of Europe, South America, Mexico, the Caribbean islands, and Central America. The month of celebrations helped us to capture the spirit and cultures of so many people who descend from vast geography. Best of all, Sra. Ponte and Srta. Messer witnessed the spark of curiosity in students' eyes, and wide interest.
