Middle School

Welcome to Montgomery's Middle School!
Connor

Our school year is divided into three academic trimesters with seven classes that meet Monday through Friday from 8:20 AM to 4:15 PM in a six-day rotating schedule.

Our students begin and end each day with an advisor period. On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings the advisor period is scheduled for 30 minutes. On Tuesday and Friday mornings advisor meets for ten minutes followed by our 30-minute Chapel program. Each afternoon advisor meets for 20 minutes.

Our Middle School community, grades 6 –8, takes full advantage of our beautiful sixty-acre campus and magnificent facilities, moving from building to building for their classes, competing on our well-manicured athletic fields and enjoying a delicious family style lunch in our beautiful dining room.

Our faculty knows each child well and incorporates different methods of instruction and assessments to address individual student abilities. Our rich, student-centered curriculum is designed with the understanding that our students will need not only a mastery of content but a well developed set of skills. If you were to tour our campus and look in on our classes you might find students in one class working collaboratively, using the technology of Smartboards and web 2.0 tools to investigate and present information. In another class, the students might be applying their critical thinking skills to understand and appreciate different cultures in ways that support our Cultural Enrichment Vision.

Our academic program is further enriched by a wide variety of opportunities for students to experience and lead. These opportunities are presented in two categories, required and elective. As part of our academic program, our students are expected to compete in our Interscholastic Athletic Program and participate in our Environmental Initiative and service learning as part of their curriculum. They are also expected to participate on day trips to New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. as well as well as our sixth grade trip to Echo Hill in Maryland, our seventh grade trip to Florida, and our eighth grade trip to Montreal and Quebec City, Canada.

Giving Middle School students some control of their educational program is essential in the development of their independence. Our students can elect to run for leadership positions in the Student Government or the Athletic Association. They may choose to sing in our Concert Choir or to participate in our Winter Musical. All students must also take Required Enrichment classes which vary by grade.

All aspects of the Middle School experience are intentionally structured to provide students with confidence, values, habits, skills and knowledge to succeed.

  • Middle School Students Excel in Science Fair Competitions

    Posted on May 1, 2013

In March four Montgomery School students participated in the Chester County Science Fair. Sixth graders Danny Himsworth and Aidan Woolley, seventh grader Gigi Harris, and eighth grader Rachana Mudipalli competed with the best middle school science students in the county. These students began their projects at the beginning of the school year, conducted independent research and followed strict competition guidelines. Most of their work was completed on their own time (weekends, study halls, vacations). All projects were judged by category and across all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade entries. Gigi Harris received an Honorable Mention in the Behavioral Sciences category, Aidan Woolley received 2nd place in the Botany category, and Rachana received first place in microbiology, received a special award for microbiology, and second best in entire show for the middle school category. Aidan and Rachana then moved on to the Tri-State Competition (PA, NJ, DE) with thirteen counties represented and over a 1000 entries. Aidan placed 2nd in Botany out of a group of 28 middle school students. Rachana also came in 2nd in Microbiology out of a group of 22 middle school students, and also received an honorable mention from the American Society for Microbiology Eastern PA division. In addition, Rachana received a $1000 check, a special award from Parenteral Drug Association. Both Aiden and Rachana will now progress to national level competition.

The good news keeps coming as Science teacher David Kline was recently awarded a grant to participate in the Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) which is hosted by the Fulbright Commission in Japan. As stated in the acceptance letter, the mission of this program is “to raise awareness of ESD-oriented school programs, enhance ESD-related curricula in both countries, and deepen a sense of global interconnectedness and cooperation between teachers in Japan and the United States.” The program is jointly funded by the governments of Japan and the United States. David is participating in a joint conference in San Francisco from April 28 - May 1 and will travel to Tokyo from June 18 - July 2. This is a tremendous honor for David and an equally great honor for Montgomery School!

  • Montgomery Students Sweep at Historic Yellow Springs Art Show

    Posted on May 1, 2013

Montgomery students displayed their artwork at the opening of the 40th Annual Historic Yellow Springs Art Show on April 27-28. As part of the Student Clothesline Challenge, their pieces were hung on a clothesline on the porch of the Lincoln building, which celebrated the humble beginnings of this historic show while showcasing the next generation of artists. Student artwork was blindly judged and our students were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, as noted below - an amazing performance which speaks volumes about our fine arts program and the faculty (Dina Schmidt and Evan Thomas) who work with our students. You can enjoy seeing all our student's artwork at Montgomery's own All School Art Show, opening this Friday 5/3.

7th grade students enjoyed the culmination of their recent science project when they launched their hand built rockets on the athletic fields. Each student took his/her turn with their hands on the controls directing the launch of their rocket. Part of the experiment was to measure the trajectory of each launch, as well as the success of the construction of the rockets. But the real excitement was at the launch pad.
