From the LS Head

Welcome to Montgomery’s Lower School! From the time our young students start their day shaking hands with a teacher or administrator at 8:30 AM until dismissal at 3:15 PM, children are actively engaged in learning. Montgomery’s Lower School core curriculum includes Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Spanish (French in fifth grade), Art, Music, Library, Technology, and Physical Education. Teachers celebrate student successes, support their struggles, and encourage the development of everyone’s personal best.

Montgomery’s Lower School has a special energy, an enthusiastic spirit of camaraderie, a curiosity about our world, and an excitement to learn new things every day that’s contagious. A variety of learning is experienced throughout the day. Students may be on the floor working on a project, outside by the creek for a science lesson, laughing on the playground, or determined to learn a new skill during P.E. While academics are strongly emphasized, Montgomery is so much more than a reading, writing, and arithmetic school. In the Lower School children are loved dearly and celebrated for the unique individuals that they are. It’s a place where everyone knows each child and recognizes his/her special talents and gifts, while at the same time offering a supportive environment that encourages the students to take risks and stretch to try new things for the very first time. Even when it looks really hard, our students will always take risks as our teachers successfully nurture the will to always try.

Our small class size allows teachers to closely monitor a students’ development and challenge them with age- and ability-appropriate activities. Our overarching goal in the Lower School is to guide children as they make a positive transition to Montgomery’s Middle School years, fully equipped with confidence, a strong academic foundation, and a curiosity for learning.

Q

Assuming money is no object, what would you do with a day during which you could do anything you wanted?

A

Fly my entire family to SC so we can all be together at a house on the beach - the water temp is a nice 80 degrees so everyone goes in the water to jump the calm waves. We take long walks looking for pretty seashells. Dinner would be in downtown Charleston at Anson Restaurant followed by a walk on King Street and the Battery.

Q

Assuming money is no object, what would you do with a month during which you could do anything you wanted?

A

A few years ago, my family went on a cruise together. What a wonderful time we had touring the Caribbean islands! I would do something similar – a cruise ship makes traveling a bit easier and luxurious. This time our cruise ship would travel the Mediterranean, hitting Italy, Greece, Egypt, etc!
