Environmental Sustainability

"Montgomery's many resources include a 60-acre campus rich in facilities, a strong faculty and staff, and a loyal community. The School is committed to being a good steward of these assets by carefully optimizing their use, and adopting responsible environmental practices... Through these efforts, we will model these guiding principles for our students as an important component of their overall learning experience."

From Montgomery's 2009 Strategic Plan

In addition to a recent two-year grant to continue the development of stronger environmental awareness and sustainability (see sidebar story on PEAS), the Board of Trustees approved the following goals as part of the 2009 Strategic Plan:

Goals

  1. Actively steward our campus and facilities, with an emphasis on environmental sustainability and “green” practices.
  2. Provide an expanded environmental curriculum.
  3. Invest in our faculty by ensuring opportunities for professional development and growth.

PEAS

Most people think that PEAS are a tasty green vegetable that grows in pods on a vine, but at Montgomery School PEAS stands for something else: Programs for Environmental Awareness and Sustainability. The PEAS program is part of an environmental grant to develop in our students an appreciation for the natural world, an awareness of the environmental issues that face our planet, and the 21st century skills required to work collaboratively in an increasingly technology-based globally-diverse atmosphere to create sustainable solutions to the problems we face.

PEAS took root in earnest during the 2008–2009 school year with third, fifth, and seventh graders leading the charge. Third graders focused on sustainable land management using our own 60-acre campus as a starting point, fifth graders learned about solid waste impact and management, and seventh graders studied and addressed issues of sustainable ocean food resources.
