Character Education

Students at Montgomery participate in a rigorous and well-rounded curriculum that tests their academic abilities, but the program also helps them to grow as thoughtful, considerate, and aware individuals. Montgomery School’s program is infused with a range of character lessons to deepen each student’s understanding of qualities like integrity and compassion.

Montgomery School’s program is infused with a range of character lessons to deepen each student’s understanding of qualities like integrity and compassion.Students participate in hands-on service learning projects that help people outside the school. The projects are connected to the learning that is occurring in the classroom so that the students have a great understanding of how their service is making a difference.
  • The Chapel program is a character-based program presented to students twice weekly. Chapel messages focus on lessons of character, and are presented by faculty and students alike, beginning with our youngest grades.
  • Character lessons are embedded in the curriculum, from the types of reading done in class, to the discussions students have with their teachers and their peers.
  • Every day teachers and administrators lead their lunch tables in conversations about character, table manners, and conduct, all while eating a healthy lunch.
  • Our School Counselor meets regularly with classrooms and advisory groups to discuss and often with small groups of students for lessons or conversations about friendship, and other character-based topics.
  • Students in Lower School grades participate in a character education program, entitled Leader In Me, and Middle School students participate in an advisory program that emphasizes character. This curriculum provides the structure of character-based education lessons, that faculty then reinforce on a daily basis. In addition, morning meetings occur throughout the week as a gathering of classroom students during the beginning of the day. The meetings set the tone for respectful learning and establishes a climate of trust.
  • In the Make.a.Difference project, eighth grade students complete a year-long study of a person or organization that is making a difference in the world. One former 8th grade student described this project’s impact this way.
